Ham Radio Licensing Class at Broward EOC

CLASS NAME: FCC Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) Technician Licensing Class

DESCRIPTION: This course will teach you what you need to know in order to get your first FCC Amateur Radio license.  In addition to being a great hobby, there is a serious side as well - when ham radio becomes a public service.  When emergencies strike, ham operators are at their best.  Ham radios, often, are the only means of communications following a disaster where they continually keep emergency responders in contact with many necessary resources.

Ham operators also provide communications support for many blue-sky/normal day events such as bike rides, marathons and parades.  Morse code is NOT required for this course.  We will have a team on Sunday to administer the FCC licensing exam.   Please bring $15.00 CASH ONLY for the testing/licensing session.  Please read the additional information.

PRE-REQUISITE:          None

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • CERT members,
  • Community Organizations,
  • Faith Based Organizations,

  • Anyone interested in learning the basics about radio communications.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: We will be working out of the 2018-2022 Technician Class FCC Element 2 Amateur Radio License Preparation book written by Gordon West, WB6NOA.  This book contains the complete 423-question FCC Element 2 question pool effective July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2022.  It is not required, but highly encouraged that students purchase this book prior to class as it not only contains the question pool with the answers for the exam, it contains an explanation for each of the questions.

The FCC question pool without the explanations can also be found online for free at http://www.ncvec.org/page.php?id=369 .  Students will also need to apply for a free FCC Registration Number (FRN number).  This will be used in lieu of your Social Security number.  You can apply for an FRN number by going to:  https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do

Please bring your lunch each day, the EOC has a cafeteria with refrigerator, microwave, toaster-oven and vending machines.
